The contest, which was participated by the local students of FEU Roosevelt Rodriguez, was one of several activities organized by the FEURR Student Council to commemorate the “FEURRsuan Natin ‘Yan” event. The competition was created to highlight the students’ passion for poetry and artistic writing talent.

“All we had in our minds when planning the event was focused more on the students’ enjoyment. We wanted kasi talaga to have an event celebrating Valentine’s Day, and spoken word poetry was the one that came to our minds. Another personal goal din na gusto ko ma-gain ng students with the event is to develop their love for literature and ma-enliven yung spoken word poetry sa school kasi last year, hindi siya nagawa,” Mr. Carl Angelo Cagatin, the Student Council Vice President stated.

In writing their compositions, students were obliged to create original pieces revolving around the subject of love. They were free to express themselves in the Filipino or English medium and were allowed to use musical accompaniment to set the mood of their performances.

Mr. Cagatin, who previously won the Montalban 150th Anniversary Spoken Poetry Competition, was one of the contest’s judges, along with Ms. Dona Cloma and Ms. Mylene Villanueva. According to the FEUR-RSC Vice President, the most important aspects of a poem’s content are its creativity and the story it tells. In terms of delivery, he admires the use of a natural tone while still being able to give listeners “goosebumps.”

By the end of the performances, the speakers announced the three students who succeeded in the competition. Ms. Juliana Paraguas, a Grade 12 student, was hailed as the champion. Ms. Maria France Reyes, from Grade 11, was recognized as second place, and Ms. Athena Mae Bello, another Grade 11 student, was awarded third place.

“Since the contest was a resounding success, considering the feedback na we gathered, I am very positive na the next batch of the student council will hold the same contest next year,” Mr. Carl Cagatin highlighted.
